The Circeo National Park covers about 8,500 hectares and presents varied aspects, from the forest to the coastal dunes, to the promontory, to the wetlands, to the islands.
The coastline and the islands of Ponza and Ventotene are the main tourist attraction of the area thanks to the pristine sea.
Along the coastal strip there are also small lakes of great naturalistic interest, including Lake Fogliano and Lake Sabaudia.
Latina is the capital of the southernmost province of Lazio, in the heart of the Pontine countryside.
It was founded in 1932, formerly named Littoria, in the “agro pontino”: this area once covered by marshes and reclaimed in the 1930’s.
The city plan is octagonal with straight streets starting from the central core of the city, Piazza del Popolo.
The main buildings, including the Police Headquarters, the Prefecture and the Town Hall lay around this center.
On the coast, Sperlonga is a delightful Medieval town with narrow streets and houses overlooking the sea.
Here, you can admire, in addition to the intense color of the sea, the cave of Tiberius, a cavity open on the sea where artifacts dating back to the first century were found.
Currently, the nearby National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga saves these artifacts.
San Felice Circeo, a well-known tourist town on the coast, shows a Medieval part in an elevated position on Mount Circeo.
Down the mountain, Formia is a charming town overlooking the Gulf of Gaeta, with beautiful beaches, with visible traces of the Roman era.
Terracina is also worth a visit, overlooked by the temple of Jupiter Anxur, reachable by a panoramic road.
Its Piazza del Municipio is a tall historical center, where you can see the medieval Cathedral dedicated to S. Cesareo with a wide staircase and a columned portico.
Finally, Gaeta is located on a tongue of land dominated by Monte Orlando.
You can reach the castle along the narrow streets of the medieval district.
Then you can get to the Cathedral near the port, dedicated to S. Erasmo, embellished with Moorish inserts.
Roman archaeological remains of extreme value can be admired in Cori, Norma, Sezze, Monte San Biagio and Ninfa.
The latter offers a historical garden, a kind of natural monument collecting specimens of flora and fauna from all over the world on the model of the English garden.
Castles, fortresses and churches from the Middle Ages are located in Cori, Fondi, Maenza and Priverno, with the abbey of Fossanova, Minturno and Sermoneta.
