Elba is the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago. The natural beauty of its marvelous sea (more than 10 km of sandy beaches, 4 pebble and 3 of cliffs), goes hand in hand with accommodation and sports facilities; swimming pools; golf greens; riding stables; playgrounds for adults and children; and deep sea fishing. The beautiful sea surrounding the island is one of the largest marine parks in Europe, the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago.
Third in size among the Mediterranean islands, Elba is an inexhaustible source of attractions. Therefore, it requires adequate time to visit and stay, in order to fully appreciate it. Geologists, naturalists and botanists consider Elba an open-air laboratory, thanks to its geological conformation and its particular geographical position. The island is also rich in history and offers Roman, Medieval and Renaissance testimonies. There are eight municipalities (Portoferraio, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Campo nell’Elba, Porto Azzurro, Rio Marina, Capoliveri, Rio Elba). Each of them looks like a small world with unique features. In Portoferraio, you can visit the Cosimo I de’ Medici fortress, and the inner historical streets. Here there’s also the Napoleonic Museums and Villa San Martino, to remember the presence of the emperor of France, Napoleon, forced to a long exile on the Elba Island.
The beaches of Portoferraio are spectacular: Biodola, Scaglieri and Forno overlooking the Gulf of Biodola; Ghiaie, Padulella, Samson and Capo Bianco, close to the Scoglietto, just behind the historic center.
Another stop on our itinerary is Marciana with many beautiful beaches: Procchio, Poalina, Spartan, Pomonte, Sant’Andrea and Chiessi, beloved by surfers. Marciana Marina, the smallest of the municipalities of Elba is our third stop. Here there are the beaches of Bagno, dello Schioppo and Redinonce, with gravel, stones and extraordinary seabed. Fourth stop is Campo nell’Elba, with its beaches of Campo, Fetovaia and Cavoli. Visit the small and ancient villages of San Piero and Sant’Ilario, on the hills overlooking the Gulf of Marina di Campo. For those who love nightlife, Marina di Campo is one of the most popular places for young tourists.
Even Capoliveri, fifth stage of our itinerary, is much loved by young people, thanks to the presence of many beaches, above all the Lacona one, several hotels, and fashionable shops. The sixth stop is Porto Azzurro, where traces of the Spanish domination (17th Century) are still visible, such as the San Giacomo Fort. The seventh stage is Rio Marina, a municipality of the Mining Park. Last stop is Rio Elba, the oldest town of the island, with settlements dating back to the Neolithic.
Activities in the Elba Island are the typical ones of a seaside destination in Italy. Yet, what we recommend you is to go beyond the Elba Island and to expand you trip to the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.
Apart from Elba, the other six islands are also distinguished by certain peculiarities. Nevetheless, the wild nature of the landscape is their common feature. On the Giglio Island, the Giglio Porto piers; the island picturesque alleys; and the remains of the Pisan fortress of Giglio Castello are worthy of note. In Capraia Island, diving enthusiasts will find magnificent backdrops, and submarine archaeological remains. Montecristo Island (natural reserve since 1971) is the wildest and least inhabited island of the Archipelago. Giannutri Island is the triumph of the purest nature and simplicity of life. In Pianosa Island, you can also admire the remains of the Roman villa of Agrippa. In Gorgona Island, there are the beautiful beaches of Cala Martina and Cala Scirocco.
The flavors of the Elban cuisine are based on simple and basic dishes. In particular, Riese-style Cod; the “Gurguglione” based on vegetables; rice with cuttlefish ink; stuffed squid; the famous cacciucco, a typical fish soup; boiled octopus, fried zerri and stuffed sardines. The Elban wines are excellent quality ones. Since some years, the D.O.C. label have been controlling different types of wine. The most famous are Elba Bianco (white), Elba Rosso (red), Elba Rosato, Ansonica, Moscato and Aleatico (DOCG).
